School Boards Support New Curriculum

Ontario's revised sex education curriculum has the thumbs up of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.

Cathy Geml says the document doesn't appear to be much different than what they're teaching now. She says the board took it upon themselves to add sexting to their own curriculum.

"Since there was so much technology in schools we've made a concious decision as a board three years ago, through our mental health team, in conjunction with our safe schools and our program team, to address what we saw as a growing problem, which was the inappropriate use of technology and sexting being one of them," says Geml.

Director of Education with the Lambton Kent District School Board Jim Costello agrees, adding the changes will better teach students about what they see around them. "We want our students to be well balanced in their view of relationships, and I think we have to acknowledge the types of relationships that are common in the community are different than what they were 20 years ago."

Geml adds that the concept that "no means no" and talking about consent is a new element that they look forward to including. She adds that parents should be comforted in the fact that the Council of Bishops and the Institute for Catholic Education were involved in the development of the new curriculum.
