Free Ice Fishing Weekend

Thick ice on area lakes and rivers means Family Fishing Weekend will be a busy one in the region.

Kevin Sprague, conservation officer with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, says so far they've had no incidents on the Canadian side of the border.

"Right now with the large amount of snow we have on the ice, it pushes the ice down and water seeps up and it creates slush beds," says Sprague. "You can get stuck out on the ice in slush, but for the most part there's no chance of going through the ice in the safe areas."

Sprague says it's been an average season for ice fishing so far in terms of fish caught and for violations.

Canadian residents can fish in Ontario this weekend without having to buy a licence. For more information click here.
