Council Trims Increase To 1.73%

Despite taking steps towards lowering Chatham-Kent's tax increase for 2015, Chatham-Kent's budget committee still has more work to do.

After a closed session, councillors have reduced the 2015 tax impact from 2.2% to 1.73%.

That still leaves a motion calling for a $2.56-million cut to infrastructure reserves. A near two-hour discussion was devoted to the municipality's ten-year infrastructure plan, with more still to come.

Budget Chair Derek Robertson says Tuesday's meeting was a good sign. "But our work is not done yet. So let's be real clear that we will continue to deliberate. Council has been quite vibrant in their bringing of solutions to the table."

With the current adjusted tax increase, Robertson adds they'll really be voting on a $1.9-million infrastructure cut.
