Making Money By Recycling

Chatham-Kent’s new recycling contract includes a profit sharing opportunity that could make the municipality some extra money.

The municipality recently signed a seven-year contract with Progressive Waste Solutions that provides revenue back based on the amount of recyclables collected.

However, Manager of Garbage and Recycling Services Rick Kucera says Chatham-Kent is currently underachieving when it comes to diverting trash from the landfill. “There definitely is still quite a percentage of residents putting out up to four bags on a weekly basis. So we see, through the numbers, that in fact we are generating less tonnage of recycling per household than other similar communities.”

The garbage bag limit was reduced to three bags this week to encourage more recycling.
