The North American International Auto Show opens to the public today and attendees will see more electric vehicles than ever before.
The big three all have one -- the Fiat 500e, the Ford Focus Electric and the Chevrolet Volt -- and luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes and of course Tesla are jumping on board as well.
Senior Vice President of Chevrolet Alan Batey helped unveil the new Chevy Bolt concept earlier in the week, answering questions as to whether or not there's a need for electric cars if North American gas prices remain low. "Low fuel prices, for this type of vehicle, aren't the reason -- that's not what will propel it. We believe it's really about the technology. That's what people buy it for."
Batey believes the Bolt, which is expected to be ready for distribution in another 18-months, is finally an affordable, more eco-friendly option, as it will cost $30,000 and go 321 km (200 mi) on a single charge.
The auto show is open to the public until January 25.
