Keeping Safe This Christmas

The Chatham-Kent Fire Department is offering up some tips to keep families safe this holiday season.

Public Educator Whitney Burk says people need to pay attention to what they're cooking, even if they are trying to entertain guests at the same time.

"If you do have a fire in your kitchen and it is a small fire, we recommend that you use a lid to smother the fire," says Burk. "If you have a fire extinguisher that you are able to use in your kitchen, we also recommend that you do that. We also say that if the fire is too big or too scary, just get out."

She also recommends using flameless candles instead of real ones. "But if you do choose to burn candles, just always make sure you blow them out before you leave the room or go to bed. And obviously keep them away from children and pets."
