Chatham-Kent-Essex MP Dave Van Kesteren's first private member's bill has been voted through to the Senate.
The bill looks to make changes to the Canadian Pension Plan and Benefits Act. As of right now, people who murder their spouses or parents can claim the victim's benefits. This new bill would deny murderers that right.
Van Kesteren aknowledges that it's a strange loophole in the system. He adds the federal government just hasn't gotten around to making the change. "Governments by and large are consumed to the legislation that is a part of their platform," says Van Kesteren. "So it was one of these things that was always considered, but no government ever got to it.
Van Kesteren adds those who are charged with manslaughter but not sentenced are the exception to this rule. Van Kesteren hopes the Senate will pass this bill by June 2015.
