Sydenham Wind Project Scrapped

The mayor of Dawn-Euphemia thinks it could be an opportunity to attract new residents to the township.

Bill Bilton and other landowners who signed leases several years ago to allow turbines to be built on their properties, have received letters from the developer saying the project will not go ahead.

Bilton says Mainstream Renewable Power had proposed building about 25 turbines in the Sydenham Wind Energy Centre. He says the company deemed the wind speed in the area insufficient.

Assuming other developers think the same, Bilton says the community could promote itself as a turbine free township to entice new residents.

Given the controversy surrounding wind farms since he signed the lease, Bilton says he would have to think long and hard before signing another one.
