Blue Water Bridge Canada is responding to calls for increased safety measures following several suicides this summer.

In an e-mail to BlackburnNews, COO John Elliot says its a complex and frustrating challenge. He says they’re not aware of any netting or safety device that could be properly and effectively fitted to the spans.

With that said, Elliot adds that security of the bridges and safety of those who travel on them is an ongoing concern.

Elliot says continuing discussions involving co-owners and area public safety and emergency response agencies may lead to a suitable solution.

Four people have jumped to their deaths from the Blue Water Bridges this year. Most recently, an abandoned vehicle was discovered on the westbound span last Thursday night. The body of a 44-year-old Sarnia woman was recovered Friday morning.
