Spitfires’ Training Camp Opens

Windsor Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel expects fierce competition for defense at this year’s training camp.
He says five players are vying for two spots on the team. “When you see the kids come back, you can see the guys who spent time in the gym and who worked at their craft.”
Headed into the team’s first exhibition game against the Whalers in Plymouth this Saturday, Rychel says he’s keeping an eye out for players who have the whole package. “First of all, it’s the hockey playing,” he says. “You want to see his smarts and his hockey sense, and you want to see his skating. And, his ability to play the game at a high level.”
As for what he’s looking forward to this season, Rychel admits he’s got Memorial Cup fever again. “I really miss being there, but you know, we had some bad luck and that’s in the past. We had some sanctions (last season). We’re looking forward to a good clean start.”
