The Coast Guard is now dispatching five tugs to help free a 656 ft freighter grounded in the shipping channel of Lake St. Clair near the Detroit River.

The Federal Rideau, a vessel carrying roughly 22,672 tonnes of wheat, became stuck early Sunday morning.

Coast Guard officials say other vessels are still able to make their way through the channel and there has been no pollution or injuries reported.

It is believed the ship became grounded due to a loss of steering caused by a motor coupling failure. Repairs to the coupling are complete, but once freed the freighter will be taken to Belle Isle for an underwater survey.

The vessel was en route to Montreal, Quebec, when it became stuck. The Canadian Coast Guard is directing one-way water traffic in the area.
