The Explore the Shore event in Essex is drawing people from across the county and even further to venture along County Rd. 50 to enjoy all there is to offer along the north part of Lake Erie.

“There’s a lot of people coming in from [Chatham-Kent],” says Mark Reid, who works a piece of land for Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards. “We see several that are coming down and said ‘oh we heard about this last year and our friends told us that we missed a good time’ well now they’re here.”

“It’s been great today, you get weather like this and it couldn’t be any better,” says Doug Balsillie, part-owner of the family farm the Fruit Wagon, noting the event is an opportunity for farm education. “A generation ago everybody had a fairly close tie to a farm. It’s not like that anymore. It’s a huge challenge for our industry to make sure that we’re talking to the public and keeping them informed of what’s going on.”

The weekend event is the fifth for Explore the Shore in Essex with people encouraged to enjoy Canada’s most southernly drive to enjoy the food, taste the wine and check out the shops. The event also doubles as a fundraiser for the local food bank with locations accepting canned goods.
