Homeless Emergency Phone Line Coming
In an effort to help citizens experiencing homelessness Chatham-Kent is setting up a help line.
Director of Employment and Social Services Valerie Colasanti says there’s a need for the Homeless Response Line. “They’ve had to rely on, sort of, word of mouth, for churches or various service groups being able to reach them, it hasn’t really been formalized,” says Colasanti. “So now there’s an actual phone number that anyone would be able to call if they’re experiencing homelessness.”
Historically people experiencing emergency homeless situations were provided services through Employment & Social Services, The Salvation Army, The Women s Centre and other local non-profit and church organizations. Service at each agency could only be publicly accessed during business hours.
People will be able to call 519.354.6628 and will be screened, diverted to safe alternative housing, or referred to local emergency accommodations . The phone line goes into affect August 1st, and is operational from 4:30pm until 8am Monday through Friday and 24 hours-a-day on weekends and holidays.
