Decommissioning Chatham Jail Continues

Now that the last inmates have moved out, staff at the Chatham Jail will continue work to decommission the facility.
Usable objects such as desks and security equipment will be moved to other facilities, however, most of the fixtures will remain.
Assistant Deputy Minister of Institutional Services Steven Smalls says they are in the middle of that process now. “After we decomission it and we’re in the process of that now, moving out all the property we can still utilize at other facilities, we turn it over to Infrastructure Ontario and they work with the local governments to determine future use of the facility.”
Chatham-Kent Council is currently looking into designating the building under the Ontario Heritage Act.
