Horse racing is officially back in Leamington starting this September.

Tom Bain with the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association confirms there will be 13 race dates in total. “It’s not just saving jobs for horse-people in the area, it’s saving jobs for those in the agriculture industry, it’s saving the blacksmiths and veterinarians. And what an area that needs employment — the Town of Leamington right now, with Heinz having shut down, is recovering but only somewhat recovering.”

Bain expects the races to create a number of part-time jobs as there needs to be construction work done at the fairgrounds, along with people needed to run the races and events surrounding them.

The first races are slated for September 7 at the Leamington Fairgrounds.
