UPDATE: Fire Engulfs Industrial Building (Video)

Investigators from the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal are at former Wickes Bumper Plant after a massive fire broke out in the building in the 9100-block of Tecumseh Rd. E.

Windsor Fire Prevention Officer Lee Tome says fire crews responded to the blaze around 6pm on Wednesday, and firefighters were instructed not to enter the building for safety reasons. Tome says part of the roof of the building collapsed and fire crews had to fight the blaze defensively.

Tome says due to heavy black smoke moving southwest from the fire, the public was asked to seek shelter as a precaution. Any residents in the path of the smoke were asked to close their doors and windows. He says the vacant building was taken over by the City of Windsor in 2010 and cleaned. There are no chemicals are stored on site.

The cause of the blaze and a damage estimate are not expected until Thursday morning as firefighters were still on scene at 11pm. No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire.

Windsor police say Tecumseh Rd. E between Penang Lane to Lauzon Rd. is currently closed while emergency crews are on the scene. The road is expected to be closed well into the evening. The public is asked to avoid the area.
