A new quality index has some good news for cancer patients living within the Erie St.Clair Local Health Integration Network.

The Cancer Care Quality Index looks at the latest data to measure 33 key indicators including wait times for treatment, screening, survivor programs and end of life programs. It compares local rates with the provincial average.

It says the Erie St.Clair LHIN has the best breast cancer screening rates in the province. It also says 87% of breast cancer patients received chemotherapy within 120 days of first seeing their doctors, compared to 77.6% province-wide. For colon cancer, 85% of patients here received chemotherapy within that time frame compared to 83.9% across Ontario.

The index makes special note of the new Regional Men’s Health Program saying it should improve prostate cancer detection and treatment.

As for areas of improvement, the index by the Cancer Quality Council of Ontario cites prevention, screening for other cancers and survivor programs.
