The mayor of Chatham-Kent says the municipality is still in talks with Navistar concerning the future of its Chatham property.

The truck manufacturer is nearly done its site clean-up on Richmond St. after demolishing the facility. Randy Hope says they’re still waiting to hear where the company is on Phase 2 of the environmental assessment.

“As long as they continue to own the land they don’t have to do a Phase 2,” says Hope. “That’s where we’ve been having discussions with the company is, how do you market properties that if you don’t know the status of the land.”

The municipality wants to ensure the land isn’t contaminated. Hope says municipal officials have discussed potential uses for the property and see it as a prime piece of real estate, but can’t move forward until Navistar officials decide what they want to do with it.
