Rondeau Pier To Remain Closed

The pier in Rondeau Provincial Park will remain closed for the entire summer.

It was damaged by severe ice build up during the harsh winter. The Ministry of Natural Resources says Ontario Parks must complete an environmental assessment before deciding whether to repair the pier or completely tear it down.

“There was an engineering firm that was doing an assessment. They’ve now completed the assessment and the rehab options and we’re reviewing the report. We have to keep it closed because it’s a safety risk, but then we have to take time to consider our options,” says spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources Jolanta Kowalski. “We will be looking at a number of things as we review the report. Factors under consideration are things like recreational opportunities, species at risk and cost effectiveness.”

Kowalski would not say what the ministry’s options are at this point.
