Transferring prisoners from the Chatham courthouse to the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre or the new Windsor jail will cost the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services $520,000 every year.

The ministry tells BlackburnNews.com there will be an additional start-up cost of $230,000, for a grand total of $750,000 in 2014.

“This amount may vary depending on the number of inmates transported to the court,” says Spokesperson for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Brent Ross. “The ministry will be working with its justice sector partners to look at ways to optimize technology for video court appearances.”

The OPP is responsible for all transportation to and from the Chatham courthouse.

The operating costs for the Chatham jail during the 2013-2014 fiscal year came in at $4-million. The 164-year-old facility is closing this month due to high maintenance costs.
