Union Talking With Highbury Canco
Talks between UFCW Local 459 and Highbury Canco are ongoing with the union president confirming to BlackburnNews.com the two sides will meet within the next week.
Union president Rob Crawford wouldn’t confirm a date for new talks, but is confident a labour deal will be hammered out before Highbury Canco begins its operations in Leamington, which he expects will be sometime in July.
“We’re going to get there. We’re going to get there, absolutely,” says Crawford. “We’re going to try and negotiate a deal that’s tailored to the needs of the membership and to the company too.”
Crawford adds an adjustment centre will be opened at the union hall for those members who will be left without a job after Heinz closes its doors on June 27. The union is looking to secure jobs with Highbury Canco, with the new company set to employ about 250 workers once it takes over the current Heinz facility.
