Looking For Year Round Production

A number of Ontario greenhouse operators would like to grow plants year round, and are hoping for a break in the cost of energy to let them do that.

Justine Taylor with the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Producers says the short days over the winter are a big issue.

“In order to produce 12 months of the year in this area you would need to install supplemental lighting in order to get the growth you would need in those months,” says Taylor. “The types of programs we have been working with the Ministry of Energy look at offering incentives to encourage expansion in Ontario, so those programs tend to look at increased energy use.”

Cutting the cost to growers is one option and most support for co-generation would be another.
