Wolverines Call Jenkins Field Home
Young baseball players in Chatham-Kent looking to compete at the highest level will be able to stay closer to home with the Western Counties Wolverines Minor Bantam ‘AAA’ team.
“There’s a lot of other teams that are forming up in the area, London, Windsor, and other areas that are trying to put more teams together and they seem to be drawing a lot of our local athletes,” says Head Coach Brendan Spence. “We wanted to try to keep the travelling down for the parents and of course the cost down for the parents and try to utilize some of our great resources here.”
Six members of the team are from Chatham, three from Sarnia and three from Corunna. The team’s coaching staff also includes former Montreal Expos pitcher Bill Atkinson who has been helping the boys adjust to the new pitching distance and the mound.
The Wolverines are playing their home games at Fergie Jenkins Field in Chatham. They are scheduled to play in several tournaments this season, with the first one starting tonight in Mississauga.
