Grief counsellors are at Dr. David Suzuki Public School after a student was killed in a weekend crash.

Grade 7 student Alyssa Smulders was killed when the car the 13-year-old was riding in was hit by a tractor-trailer head-on Saturday afternoon. School board officials say a majority of the student body found out about Smulders’ tragic death when they arrived at school.

Smulders and 35-year-old Marc Lafontaine of Windsor were killed when their car was hit Saturday in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 401 near Mull Rd. in Chatham-Kent. The driver of the tractor trailer, a 57-year-old London man, was treated in hospital and released.

Chatham-Kent OPP aren’t expecting to release any more information about the crash until later this week. They’d like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash.
