Fighting for First Nations Education

Local First Nations groups are hoping to get the federal government’s attention over Bill C-33 before having to take drastic action.

Bill C-33 is called the First Nations Control of First Nation Education Act but Chief Greg Peters of the Delaware Nation says it doesn’t accomplish that. He would like to see further negotiation with the federal government but isn’t hopeful they will listen.

“If we have to resort to demonstrations and rallies to get our message out there, then that’s one of the things that we’re prepared to do. Whatever we have to do, we’re talking about the future for our children,” says Chief Peters.

He says rallies, like the one that created a blockade of the Ambassador Bridge in January 2013, were very successful in getting the government’s attention. But no rallies, marches or demonstrations are planned at this time.
