Pelee Island Airport Renamed

Pelee Island Airport will soon be known as Whelan International Airport in honour of the Whelan family.

Eugene Whelan, one of Canada’s most famous politicians and Essex South representative, served in the House of Commons from 1962-1984 and in the Senate from 1996-1999. The former Agricultural Minister died in February of 2013. His wife, Liz, grew up on the island.

“The Whelans were always very supportive of the Pelee Community,” says Mayor Rick Masse. “We are thrilled to be able to honour them in this way.”

The airport will be dedicated to the Whelan family on May 10 at 12:30pm.
