Parent Welcomes ARC Provincial Review

Steve Moro, a father of three children attending St.Maria Goretti Catholic elementary school in east Windsor, is happy the province will look into accommodation review’s underway across Ontario.

As student enrolment falls across Ontario, school boards are assessing which schools should close. Moro has been critical of the way the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board has carried out its review in Riverside, complaining the board appears poised to impose major changes despite objections from the community. He says the long-term objectives of the review have never been clear.

The province plans to set up a committee of school administrators, but Moro would like to see parents represented too. “Sometimes we forget that these are children that are being affected. When they come home from school, what they talk about, the anxiety they’re feeling, those are things that we always need to make sure is first and foremost,” he says. “I think the more voices you have and different perspectives, the better solution you’re going to come up with.”

The Catholic school board has three accommodation reviews underway and the board of trustees is expected to decide May 27 which schools will remain open, which will merge and which facilities will close.
