Volunteers in Leamington are sending around 33,000 lbs of canned chicken to communities in need around the world.

The Mennonite Central Committee volunteers spent the week at the HJ Heinz Grading Station on Sherk St. stirring, putting the chicken into cans, washing, and hand labeling the finished cans.

“For the price, we’re getting good value for the protein levels that are in there and it’s something that our committee can afford. We fundraise everything and that takes about $70,000,” says Volunteer Coordinator Peter Fiss.

This is the 16th year the meat canning trailer has come to Leamington. Last year’s cans were sent to Lesotho, South Africa but the committee is unsure where the cans will be sent this year.
