Improving Mobility For Seniors
Despite $44-million in cuts to OHIP funded physiotherapy programs, the province is offering fall prevention and exercise classes for free at 86 sites across the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network.
The province is committing $10-million for the publicly funded activities at retirement homes and seniors’ centres to ensure the elderly can live independently longer.
“It’s really important that they still have the opportunity to exercise, especially because it’s so important for fall prevention and the population is again, there are more and more people in rest and retirement homes,” says VON Exercise Program Coordinator Fran Betts. “They feel a little bit strong because they practice their balance and they see it getting better.”
The $10-million provides increased access to classes and care for roughly 130,00 seniors across the province. Exercise and falls prevention classes are available at 24 sites across Windsor-Essex.
