The Leamington Flyers are GOJHL Western Conference Champions after a 1-0 Gmae 5 win over the Chatham Maroons.

Knotted at zeros with under five minutes left in the contest, Mitchell Amante potted the winner. “It was the best feeling of my life,” says Amante. He believes the game could have gone either way. “It was tough. The whole series was really tough. Every game was a one-goal game except for the third one.”

Maroons Head Coach Mark Davis says it’s an unfortunate end to his team’s playoff run, which saw them sweep through the first two rounds. “We caught a (Flyers) team that was hot and they got a lot of breaks. But they deserve their breaks because they work very hard.”

The Flyers last won a championship back in 1984, when the team was part of the Great Lakes Junior Hockey League.

They’ll now go on to play in the Sutherland Cup tournament. Game schedules are expected be announced in the coming days.
