Ontario Courthouses Safe Says Sergeant

Police services across Ontario are always looking at ways to improve courthouse safety.

That from Chatham-Kent Police Service Sergeant Jason Chickowski following Friday’s shooting at a Brampton courthouse. Chickowski says enhanced security measures at the courthouse have led to more people getting arrested with drugs and weapons. “I don’t believe that people are totally aware of the security measures that are in place,” says Chickowski. “So it’s a nice surprise when we are able to find those materials before they make their way into the courthouse.”

Initial reports from Friday’s shooting in Brampton say the suspect didn’t get past the initial screening injuring the officer. The gunman was shot and killed by police while the injured officer is now out of intensive care. The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the incident.

Every municipal police service is responsible for security at its respective courthouse.
