Paralympian To Be Welcomed Home
Paralympic bronze medalist Derek Whitson will be welcomed home from Sochi at the Chatham-Kent Children’s Treatment Centre tonight.
The sledge hockey player will sign autographs and take photos at the treatment centre from 5:30pm until 7pm.
“This year I learned to really try new things and enjoy each moment, go venture off and take in the experiences, take pictures, meet people,” says Whitson, who notes he was a little apprehensive about being in Russia, given the current political unrest. “It definitely made you think that maybe this wasn’t going to happen, even though we were already over there, but the atmosphere never changed. Everyone was friendly and no one showed any kind of part of being nervous at all, so that calmed us down and it was nice to be able to just focus what you had to do on the ice.”
Sochi 2014 is Whitson’s third Paralympic Games.
