Cows killed in fire on transport truck

NEW MARYLAND, N.B. – The driver of a transport truck carrying dozens of cows had to scramble to get some of the animals out of the vehicle after it caught fire on a New Brunswick highway.

Police say the truck had more than 40 head of cattle and two horses on board when fire broke out at about 6 p.m. Monday near New Maryland.

The driver of the truck pulled over and freed 11 of the cows, who roamed on the highway before being loaded onto another vehicle.

However, three were killed in the fire while the remaining animals were able to stay in the trailer unharmed.

The fire closed the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway for about three hours Monday as crews fought the fire.

Police say the fire started in a wheel on the trailer.
