Support is growing through a GoFundMe page for a Brussels Transport driver that was involved in a fatal accident involving a protester at a pork processing plant in Burlington earlier this year.

The driver, a 28-year old from North Perth, has been charged by the Halton Regional Police with careless driving causing death.

According to organizers of the GoFundMe page, the driver has been the focus of threats by animal activist groups. and the money being raised will go towards covering legal fees and health support.

So far over $66,000 was raised as of July 22, and the total continues to climb on Thursday.

On June 19, a ‘Pig Save’ demonstration was being held outside of the Fearman’s Pork processing plant when 65-year old Regan Russell, a long time activist, was killed. Witnesses say she was trying to give the pigs in the truck water at the time.

Police say there is no evidence that it was an intentional act.

And while activists say the charge is too lenient, organizers of the GoFundMe page supporting the driver say he shouldn’t be held responsible for activists unlawfully swarming his truck.
