OFA responds to temporary worker challenge
The Ontario Federation of Agriculture is responding the federal government’s latest endeavours to stem the COVID-19 virus.
The OFA is encouraging deliberation when making decisions that will immediately and significantly impact the food supply and food security.
The OFA responding to recent news that the arrival of temporary foreign workers and seasonal agricultural workers would be disrupted or stopped would have an impact on the productivity of the entire food system.
However, Federal Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau is reassuring the industry that the government will find a way to let temporary workers into the country, but have have to develop the conditions under which will protect the health of Canadians.
Bibeau noted that the non-essential travel ban and border closure with the U.S. will not impact livestock movement or commercial goods.
The prime minister also announced the COVID-19 economic response package Wednesday, which will provide support for Farm Credit Canada (FCC), similar to what other banks are receiving.
