North American Manure Expo is coming to North Perth

By Ashley Ferraro

The North American Manure Expo is coming to North Perth in 2020.

Dave and Doug Johnston of Maplevue Farm were approached by OMAFRA last fall about the possibility of hosting the Manure Expo.

“It took us a little bit to get our head around it and think about it. Through the winter months we had some more conversations with OMAFRA and it was decided which farms we would host it on,” said Dave Johnston.

The North American Manure Expo has only been held outside of the United States once previously, which was in Guelph during August of 2013. Johnston says the event will focus on nutrient education and the latest technology.

“We’re looking at likely around 200 exhibitors that will be bringing new technology on methods to haul, stir and incorporate a whole bunch of things like that on manure. There will also be a big cover crop demonstration on different soil types and it will show how different cover crops work.”

The event will feature demonstrations and a tented portion with vendors.

Dave Johnston says that he is looking forward to the event, adding that Maplevue Farm has been engaging in innovative new methods for some time. “On our farm we’ve been doing cover crops for many years and we’ve also taken many different types of manure and manure types. Right now we are spreading lots of eggshells on our property as another source of calcium.”

Although the event is still in the planning stages, Johnston predicts the North American Manure Expo will bring upwards of 1,500 visitors and will have a strong economic impact on the community of North Perth.

The event will be held on August 26 and 27 in 2020 near Britton.
