Beef producers should offer more help to consumers

Beef producers have a role to play in countering misinformation about their products.

That according to a speaker at Beef Day at Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week.

Melissa Hall is with Elanko Animal Health and works promoting meat products.

She says labelling confusion is rife among consumers.    Terms like ‘non-G-M-O’ and ‘heart healthy’ are confusing and in some cases simply untrue.

She says it’s up to the industry to get the truth out and individual farmers have a role to play.

“Don’t be afraid of our story. I think as an agricultural industry we have a lovely story to tell. We should be very proud of what we do and what we produce so I think we just need to talk about it more and help our consumers understand,” said Hall.

She says producers should use social media as much as possible to get the message out.

Hall adds there are opportunities for farmers as the world wide population increases.
