Food Literacy Goals

Sustain Ontario is congratulating the provincial government on it’s recently-announced food literacy goals.

Sustain Ontario is a province-wide alliance of stakeholders from a number of sectors, including farming, health and environment.  It addresses issues related to healthy food and local sustainable agriculture.

Spokesperson Carolyn Young calls setting food literacy goals a very exciting step toward a healthy future for everyone in Ontario.  She argues improving food literacy has wide implications for food and farming systems.

According to Sustain Ontario, that includes increased income for local farmers through community-supported agriculture and food service contracts.  The group says more fresh food consumption is linked to better mental and physical health outcomes.

And Sustain Ontario suggests improving food literacy could also be linked to safe and inclusive communities through farmers markets and school and community gardens.
