U-S Corn Planting Officially Underway

American farmers have started getting their 2014 corn crop into the ground.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress report says they’ve got 3 per cent of their planting done.

That’s about half the 6 per cent 5-year average for this time of the year – but still a point ahead of where they were last year at this time.

The Department says farmers have also gotten a start on their spring wheat planting.

It’s at 6 per cent – one percentage point ahead of last year.

The USDA report shows no numbers yet for soybean planting.

As for the U-S winter wheat crop – the report pegs it at 34 per cent good to excellent.

That’s one point lower than last week – two points behind where it was last year at this time.
