U-S Court Ruling On COOL Challenge ‘Disappointing’

A U-S Court of Appeals has rejected a challenge to block the implementation of the USDA’s final rule on Country Of Origin Labelling.

The legal challenge was launched by a number of U-S food industry groups as well as both the Canadian Pork Council and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.

CPC Chair Jean-Guy Vincent says it’s a disappointing ruling.

But he argues it’s still essential there be a legislated change to COOL for the U-S to come into compliance with it’s WTO obligations.

Vincent also points out the legal battle is separate from the WTO dispute settlement process that’s also underway.

The Canadian Pork Council and Canadian Cattlemen’s Association argue the current COOL rules discriminate against Canadian livestock exports and violate WTO obligations.
