St. Thomas Beats Leamington 2-1

The St. Thomas Stars needed only two goals to beat the Leamington Flyers Sunday night at the Kinsmen Centre.

With the 2-1 victory, the Stars take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven GOJHL Western Conference semifinals.

There was no scoring in the opening period. Leamington had one power play chance and St. Thomas two. The Flyers outshot the Stars 13-7 in the frame.

It was still a scoreless tie in the second stanza, with the Stars getting an unsuccessful power play chance. Leamington led 21-14 in shots by the second intermission.

The Stars finally got the offence going in the third period. Brett Fisher scored on the power play at 3:31 and Peter Fleming did the same about six minutes later to double the lead. Leamington avoided the shutout when Josh Pope-Ferguson found the net later in the frame.

Anthony Hurtubise stopped all but one of the 28 shots he faced in goal for the Stars. Connor Meyerink had 24 saves for the Flyers.

Game 4 is Monday night in St. Thomas.
