Greyhounds Maul Spitfires 6-3

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds scored three second-period goals in their 6-3 home win over the Windsor Spitfires Sunday afternoon.

The Hounds put some distance between them and the second-place Sarnia Sting in the OHL West Division with 54 points. Windsor is in third place with 36 points.

Boris Katchouk opened the scoring with a power play goal at 3:45 of the first period, for the opening frame's only goal.

The Spits didn't answer back until early in the second period, when Aaron Luchuk put in his 27th goal of the season. Keegan Howdeshell provided the Soo with the lead again at 8:51, but Cole Purboo tied the game once more on the power play almost six minutes later. With the score tied at 2-2, the Greyhounds scored two more goals 24 seconds apart. Katchouk scored for the second time in the game, then Hayden Verbeek followed suit.

Logan Brown brought Windsor within a goal when he tipped a loose puck in at 4:06 of the third period. However, the Hounds put the game away thanks to back-to-back goals by Jack Kopacka, exactly three minutes apart.

Brock Baier had 24 saves in net for the Spitfires. Matthew Villalta stopped 28 shots in goal for Sault Ste. Marie.

Windsor welcomes the Mississauga Steelheads to the WFCU Centre Thursday night.
