Jr. Hockey Wrap-Up - December 9, 2017

Kyle Carter scored twice as the Lakeshore Canadiens beat the Wheatley Omstead Sharks on the road 3-0 Saturday night.

Mitch Topliffe stopped all 28 shots he faced  in goal for the Canadiens, who are tied with the Essex 73s atop the PJHL Stobbs Division standings. Each has 39 points. Wheatley is tied for seventh place with 19 points.

Carter put the Canadiens on the board first with the only goal of the opening period, at 11:20. Each team killed off one penalty, but Lakeshore's Dylan Bradley earned a game misconduct for shooting the puck over the glass.

There was no scoring in the middle period, but the Canadiens had one power play opportunity. The Sharks had two.

Lakeshore scored two more goals in the third period. Matt Smith found the goal at 6:31 and Carter scored his second goal later in the frame on the power play.

Dylan Zelko stopped 27 shots in goal for Wheatley.

The Sharks host Wallaceburg Monday night while Lakeshore hosts Blenheim Friday.

The Mooretown Flags took a big lead early and beat the Essex 73s 4-1 at home.

The Flags are in fifth place in the Stobbs Division with 32 points. Only seven points separate the top five teams as of late Saturday night.

It was late in the first period before the Flags cracked the scoreboard. Cameron Rannie did so at 17:49.

Mooretown doubled their lead with the only goal in the middle period. Duncan Core scored unassisted for the Flags. Mooretown scored two more goals in the third period, off the sticks of Daniel Wellington and Hayden MacDonald. The 73s avoided a shutout late in the third period when Sylvano Valente scored on the power play.

Jake Wilkins stopped 28 shots in net for the Flags. Jax D'Hondt had 31 saves in goal for Essex.

The 73s next see action Tuesday night when they entertain the Dresden Kings. The Flags are in Petrolia Thursday night.
