Spitfires Offence, Teddy Bears Fly 4-3

The Windsor Spitfires overcame a 3-0 deficit to beat the Erie Otters on Teddy Bear Night at the WFCU Centre.

The Spits spotted their Memorial Cup rivals that lead until late in the second period, when they began a comeback to beat the Otters 4-3 Thursday night.

Windsor now has 36 points, good for third place in the OHL West Division.

The first goal from the Otters came at 17:20 in the opening stanza from Kyle Maksimovich, his 14th goal of the season. Erie made it 2-0 just after the start of the second period when Taylor Raddysh found the net, and Chad Yetman scored his first OHL goal at 15:10.

Kirill Kozhevnikov scored his second goal of the year three minutes later and it would be a memorable one. Thousands of teddy bears flew through the air and landed on the ice as part of the Spitfires' annual holiday support of Sparky's Toy Drive. With the delay needed to clear the stuffed animals from the ice, officials ended the second period with Erie still holding a 3-1 lead.

Aaron Luchuk brought the Spitfires to within one at 7:15 in the third, his 27th goal of the season. Logan Brown tied the game just 55 seconds later, and William Sirman scored the go-ahead goal later in the frame.

The Otters appeared to score a tying goal as time expired in regulation, but a review showed that time ran out before the puck crossed the goal line, confirming victory for Windsor.

Michael DiPietro was in goal for the come-from-behind win, with 28 saves. Daniel Murphy had 36 saves for the Otters.

The Spitfires travel to Sault Ste. Marie Sunday afternoon.
