Jr. Hockey Wrap-Up - November 5, 2017

Alec DeKoning scored twice on the power play as the Sarnia Legionnaires beat the Flyers in Leamington 5-4 Sunday afternoon.

Going into the Sunday GOJHL games, the Legionnaires were in a third-place tie with the St. Thomas Stars with 20 points in the Western Conference. The Flyers, however, remain in first with 28 points.

Greg Hay opened the scoring for Sarnia at 4:35 in the opening period, and the Flyers evened things up with a goal by Kenny Styles. DeKoning notched his first extra-man goal to put the Legionnaires up 2-1 before the first intermission.

DeKoning struck again on the power play at 3:18 in the second period for a 3-1 Sarnia lead, but the Flyers put up two straight goals to tie the game by the 12-minute mark of the middle frame. Nathan Skulley and Griffin Robinson were the goal scorers. The Legionnaires, however, got that two-goal lead back when Jon Sanderson and Brock Perry lit the lamp for a 5-3 Sarnia lead after two periods.

The Flyers came within one in the third when Connor Meyerink was pulled for the extra-attacker and Josh Pope-Ferguson scored on the empty net. That would be all the scoring for the game.

Will Barber took the win in goal for Sarnia with 38 saves over 59 minutes played. Blair Coffin sat in goal for the remaining minute. Meyerink stopped 26 shots out of 31 for Leamington.

Both the Legionnaires and Flyers are in action again Thursday night. Sarnia hosts St. Thomas and Leamington welcomes Komoka.

Lucas Spence scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as the Dresden Kings beat the first-place Lakeshore Canadiens 2-1 at the Atlas Tube Centre.

The Canadiens still sit atop the PJHL Stobbs Division with 26 points. The Kings, meanwhile, are in third place with 23 points, just behind Lakeshore and the Essex 73s.

The first stanza was scoreless, though the Canadiens' Michael Long picked up a major, then a game misconduct for kneeing. The Kings cracked the scoreboard first in the second period when Kevin Ritzer scored an unassisted goal at 9:34.

Lakeshore tied the game at 1:28 in the third period when Kyler Carter found the back of the net, though Dresden regained the lead less than a minute later when Spence scored the winner.

Brendan Johnston saved all but one of Lakeshore's 29 shots in goal for Dresden. Erik Morneau had 17 saves in net for the Canadiens.

The Kings travel to Wallaceburg Wednesday night while Lakeshore heads to Petrolia Thursday.

Zach VanEyk scored a goal and two assists as the Petrolia Flyers beat the Blades in Blenheim 4-1.

Both teams are in a four-team logjam for fifth place in the Stobbs Division, with 15 points apiece.

Nick Delyzer got the Blades on the board first with the lone goal of the opening period. The Flyers tied the game up in the second frame when Kole Keating scored on the power play, so the score was 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Curtis Helps' goal in the third period gave Petrolia a 2-1 lead. VanEyk's goal provided some power play insurance for the Flyers not long after. Nick Burgess' goal sealed the win for the Flyers.

Riley Collins stopped 22 out of 23 shots in goal for Petrolia. Eric Stewardson had 21 saves for Blenheim in the loss.

Blenheim heads to Amherstburg Saturday to face the Admirals.
