Jr. Hockey Wrap-Up - September 16, 2017

Maddux Rychel scored the game-winner in double-overtime as the Leamington Flyers beat the Legionnaires in Sarnia 3-2 Saturday night.

The win keeps the Flyers perfect on the season so far with a 4-0 record and in first place in the GOJHL Western Conference standings. Sarnia falls to 1-2.

Jake Vince's two goals in the first period provided Sarnia with a 2-1 lead before the first break. Rychel's first goal of the night was sandwiched between them. There was no scoring in the middle period, but the Flyers had three power play opportunities to Sarnia's two.

Preston Corp tied the game up at 8:46 in the third period, and the score remained 2-2 until the second overtime when Rychel's second goal was the winner.

Connor Meyerink had 43 saves for Leamington to take the victory in goal. Will Barber faced 39 Flyers shots in net for the Legionnaires, stopping 36.

Both teams are back in action Thursday night, with Leamington hosting the London Nationals and Sarnia welcoming the St. Thomas Stars.

Nolan Riley and Landon Wilson scored two goals each in the Mooretown Flags' 10-0 pasting of the Wallaceburg Lakers at home.

It was the junior C regular season opener for both teams.

The game started tamely enough with just one goal in the first period. Josh Vale started the scoring off with that one. Mooretown exploded with five goals in the second frame with the two from Riley, and one each from Nolan Farr, Brett Farr and Ryan Lyle.

Wilson's goals came in the third period, with a goal apiece added from Joe Correia and Hayden MacDonald.

Jake Wilkins picked up the goose egg in net, stopping all 28 Wallaceburg shots. Josh Loranger had 28 saves through two periods for the Lakers before being pulled for Kyle Koopmans, who had 11 saves.

Wallaceburg travels to Blenheim Sunday night while the Flags travel to Petrolia Thursday.
