MacDougall Commits To The Spitfires

A player recently acquired via trade has committed to the Windsor Spitfires.

Forward Matthew MacDougall, from Aurora, Ont., has officially committed to playing for the defending Memorial Cup champions this coming season. He had committed verbally to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, but had a meeting with Spitfires staff last week.

MacDougall was sent to Windsor in a trade with the Barrie Colts at the end of June. He was a third-round pick by Barrie in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.

The 5' 10", 175 lbs MacDougall says he is excited about the idea of joining the Spitfires.

“I felt like this was a great opportunity for me,” MacDougall says in a statement. “The more I asked people, the more good things I heard about the city and the organization. Hearing all that pushed me to sign here. The team had a great season last year and has a great track record of developing players. It’s something I decided I wanted to be part of.”

Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel believes the NHL will soon be giving MacDougall a lot of attention, considering he will be eligible for next year's NHL Entry Draft.

“We took a chance when we made this trade, but it paid off," says Rychel in a statement. "I spent time with the family and let them know what we had to offer. He’s a modern day type player, very fast and skilled. On top of that, he’s a great quality kid off the ice. He comes from a great family. It’s a significant addition for us at the right time.”

MacDougall was expected to arrive in Windsor Tuesday.
