Over 400 volunteers in Leamington will be canning meat over the next three days to help people in need around the world.
The Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canner is back in the community for the 17th year.
Organizer, Marlene Schmidtgall says they hope to can 22,000 lbs of turkey over the next three days.
"Turkey thigh meat will get put into the cans with a little bit of salt, and each can is weighed and then is sealed. That's called the streamer. It's like 1930s technology," says Schmidtgall.
After that, the cans are put through a machine similar to a pressure cooker. It's cooled and then labelled. The MCC then brings the cans to communities in need around the world.
"We don't know where the cans are going to be going this year, but last year, the cans went to Ethiopia and some northern communities here," says Schmidtgall.
She says they are still accepting to donations at the Kindred Credit Union in Leamington in hopes of reaching their $80,000 goal.
The trailer will be parked outside Gleaners in Leamington.
