The Windsor Spitfires overcame a slow start and scored three straight goals in their 3-1 win over the Guelph Storm Saturday at the WFCU Centre.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 6,168, the largest of the season. It was Mickey Renaud Night, the annual game played in memory of the Spitfires captain who died suddenly in February 2008.
The first period was perfect on both sides, with no scoring and no penalties called. The scoreless tie was not broken until just after the midway point of the second period, when Guelph's Ryan Merkley scored his tenth goal of the season. Both teams exchanged unsuccessful power play opportunities in the middle frame.
The game was still 1-0 Guelph until 5:51 of the third, when Windsor's Mikhail Sergachev tied the game on an unassisted goal. Jeremiah Addison's goal gave the Spits the lead for good and Luke Boka provided insurance with a goal late in the period.
Michael DiPietro faced only 16 shots from the Storm in goal for Windsor, turning away 15 of them. Anthony Popovich had 28 saves in the losing effort for Guelph.
The Saginaw Spirit visit Windsor on Thursday night.
