Leamington Beats Sarnia in Double OT 5-4

Cale Phibbs scored the winner in double-overtime as the Leamington Flyers beat the Sarnia Legionnaires at Sarnia Arena 5-4.

The Flyers currently hold fourth place in the GOJHL Western Conference with 58 points.  The Legionnaires are in fifth with 48.

The Flyers scored two straight goals in the first period, off the sticks of Nicolas Mainella and Brett Vorschuk.  The Legionnaires got on the board before the end of the period thanks to a goal from Jarret Marks, so the score was 2-1 Leamington after one.

Both teams exchanged a goal in the second period.  Zach Vanderwal tied the game up for Sarnia just after the midway point of the period, but Leamington regained the lead about three minutes later when Jayden Fetter found the net.  Josh Pope-Ferguson added to the Flyers lead before the second intermission.

The Legionnaires got themselves back into the game and tied it up before the end of regulation on goals from Jake Vince and Nate Nienhuis, who scored short-handed and with the extra attacker to make overtime possible.  The first overtime period passed uneventfully before Phibbs scored the winner for Leamington in the second extra period.

Noah Hedrick was the winning goalie for the Flyers, with 29 saves.  Jorgen Johnson had 19 saves for Sarnia.

Leamington next hosts the St. Thomas Stars on Thursday, while the Legionnaires travel to Lambton Shores to meet the Predators on Monday afternoon.
